Medicine For Adhd – A Two Edged Sword ?
Here is a fairly typical story about medicine for ADHD. The child is 11 years old and he has been on a wide range of psychostimulants such as Concerta, Adderall, and Ritalin and also tried Focalin. The medicines worked in reducing hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour and he was doing well at school. Only problem was that the child’s character changes completely – he is withdrawn, will not respond, very irritable and depressed. When he crashes it is even worse as he becomes more anxious and almost suicidal and is obsessed with his death. Take him off his ADHD medicine and you have a normal, chatty and happy child but he is a pain in the neck and gets nothing done. Now you can see why I have used ‘two edged sword’ in the title. This poor child has been on medicine for ADHD for five years.
Now I know parents who will throw up their hands in horror and seek alternative ADHD medicine.
I can sympathise with them because a herbal/homeopathic remedy for ADHD has no side effects at all and will not affect sleep patterns or even social behaviour. It will also help the child to manage symptoms better and generally cope. There will be much fewer outbursts (those ones that make you want to disappear !), less disruptive behaviour and the child can improve concentration.
Here is another typical scenario from the medicine for ADHD world. The parents complain to their doctor that Ritalin is causing anxiety and depression in their child. He impatiently tells them to try a different drug such as Concerta. The parents protest that these drugs have the same basic ingredients, that is they are all amphetamines ! Actually the only drugs that are different are Strattera (atomoxetine) and Tenex which are nonstimulants but then they too, do have some nasty side effects. Another two edged sword.
Another alarming trend in the ADHD medicine world is the extreme lack of awareness of mental health problems among care givers and school staff. Maine is about to pass a law stating that mental health awareness education programs will be set up in schools. President Obama has signed a law giving mental health illnesses parity with other illnesses. While these are encouraging signs, the fact remains that any ADHD child has to be treated and should be given medicine which is neither addictive nor dangerous.

imulants which are basically mind altering drugs have had extensive support and publicity from a majority in the medical community. But parents now know that alternative ADHD therapies are available and that they do not present any risk to the child and they do not even have to go though all the medical monitoring (eg. ECGs because of risk of cardiac arrest). That is an enormous relief and the homeopathic remedies are now enjoying a boom because there are no risks at all and they can be a real help in combatting ADHD symptoms. Why not give your child a better chance and find out all the advantages this type of treatment can offer.
