Add moisture to the house. If you don't have a cool mist humidifier, try putting a large pot of water on the stove, bringing it to a boil, then shutting it off and letting it steam. You can keep the pot on the stove on low, but 6 times out of 10 you will forget it and cause a dangerous situation. You can also do the steamy shower thing – hot water running in the shower with the bathroom door open to let steam escape to rest of house.

We use mullein tea for cough. I've never used tea with one that young though.

Definitely do NOT use honey for any child under 2. (just in case anyone here or elsewhere recommends) Honey is a danger to children under 2, but is usually suggested for times like this.

Consider if the cough is a reaction to any new food you may have introduced. 8 mos is still young, and many foods introduced at that age carry the risk of allergic reaction. Some of the biggest culprits being – cow's milk, soy, egg, wheat and wheat gluten.

Steam up the bathroom and let the baby breathe in the steam to loosen mucus.
